Champion of Women’s Rights Remembered

I was just 12 years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I visited the U.S. Supreme Court.

The room had the glaring similarity to being in an old, majestic, beautiful church. It was very quiet and regal looking. There was no talking allowed. I was there to witness a swearing in of attorneys to the U.S. Supreme Court.

After the admission ceremony, we were led into a more festive room for brunch. As we were discussing what we had just witnessed, to our surprise in walks a small elderly woman immaculately dressed. Everyone in the room let out a big gasp. It was none other than Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

She answered a few questions about her time on the bench as a judge and took a few pictures. She was very pleasant and delightful. It was a day that I will never forget.

Sadly, on September 18th, 2020, Justice Ginsburg passed away. If you are a girl who played sports in school, or if you are a woman with a credit card in your name you owe Justice Ginsburg a big note of appreciation. She has been a longtime champion of women’s rights way before her appointment to the highest court in the land the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993.

She fought for many years against gender inequality. Her dissent in a case about pay discrimination between men and women is what led to the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Jill Lepore of The New Yorker writes, “Aside from Thurgood Marshall, no single American has so wholly advanced the cause of equality under the law,”.

This trailblazer for women’s rights will truly be missed.

In remembrance of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg here is one of her quotes:

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”
