College Life

As you can see by my hiatus, I have been a little busy. Since I last posted, I am now a second-year student at the University of Virginia! College life has been amazing so far. I have been afforded the opportunity to achieve my academic and personal goals here. I have met some of my best friends and joined many clubs where I can have fun while also making a difference.

One of my favorite experiences was being able to study abroad during my first-year summer for a month in London. I am currently twenty years old and the first big thing I did as an adult was to study abroad in London. A trip where I knew no one beforehand. A trip where I was eager to explore a new place as I started a new chapter in my life. Being at the University of Virginia and away from home has given me a taste of being an adult. Yet, with London, I felt as if I could go anywhere and do anything. There is always something happening in London, yet with the buzz of the city there is still a blanket of calmness. The city allows you to watch crowded sold-out plays at the National Theatre and take solo walks in Regent’s Park all on the same day. The city allows for the best of both worlds. That’s the magic of what makes London one-of-a-kind. I believe the uniqueness of the city and its sites has increased my admiration for London. (I included a video of my trip below!)

I have joined many clubs at UVA. I am on the Executive Leadership team for the Black Student Alliance where we put on events to uplift the Black community at the school academically and socially. I am also a member of the Black Voices Gospel Choir where I sing in the Alto section! I was recently elected as President of the choir for the next school year. I am excited to help lead our choir in inspiring and carrying out the Christian ministry to the University through song.

For those of you in the midst of the college search, I highly recommend taking tours of schools you are interested in. I believe this is the best way to see if a school is a good fit for you. During my tour of UVA, I was able to see Grounds and get an understanding for how I would feel to attend and be one of many students I saw walking with their bookbags and minds full.

As I have found a good rhythm of balancing school work and my organizations, look forward to more interviews and blogs being posted within the next months!

Here is a quote from University of Virginia alumna Dawn Staley, a basketball Hall of Famer, three-time Olympic gold medalist, and current head coach for the South Carolina Women’s Basketball team:

“A lot of people notice when you succeed, but they don't see what it takes to get there.”
