Making History in Space
Jeanette Epps of Syracuse New York will be the first African American women to join an expedition to the International space station. She has earned her BA in Physics from Le Moyne College, her master’s degree in science from the University of Maryland, College Park and her Doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland.
This launch into space will make her the first Black woman to live at the station for a long term. This is set to happen in 2021 for a long duration mission. Astronaut Mae Jamison became the first Black woman in space and there have been six African American astronauts that have gone into space. However, none have stayed aboard as long term crew members. Jeanette Epps will be the first.
In celebration of her success, I will leave you with a quote from Jeanette Epps:
“So many young girls do need to see someone who looks like them doing things that they never thought they could do.”
Be Amazing! 🍋
