Black History Month
I could not let this month end without highlighting Black History Month!
February is the month in which we in America celebrate Black History Month. This celebration of black achievement was first started in 1926 as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson who was the second African American to earn a Ph.D. at Harvard University.
This week was to be celebrated the second week of February because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 20.
It wasn't until 1976, that President Gerald Ford expanded the week into Black History Month and it is a federally recognized celebration.
This month is a time where Americans reflect on the contributions made to this country by African Americans. It’s time to reflect on the continued struggle for racial justice and equity.
The theme of Black History Month 2021 is "The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”. This theme was chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
Please take time during this month to do something to celebrate our history. Whether that be to read a poem from the first African-American to publish a book of poetry, Phillis Wheatley, or watch the Netflix series on Madam C.J. Walker, who was America’s first female self-made millionaire.
Here is a quote from TV talk show host and the first female black billionaire Oprah Winfrey :
You face the biggest challenge of all: to have the courage to seek your big dream regardless of what anyone says. You are the only person alive who can see your big picture and even you can't see it all.
Be Amazing! 🍋
