STEM Undergraduate Major becomes First Black Woman US Federal Circuit Judge

On September 1, 2021, Judge Tiffany Cunningham was appointed by President Joseph Biden to the US Court of Appeals for the federal circuit. She will be the first black woman to serve on the federal circuit. The federal appeals court was the only court to not have a black member. The Harvard Law School graduate is an experienced intellectual property attorney.   She received her Bachelors of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where her major was chemical engineering.

Her experience will be beneficial to workers and small businesses. She is knowledgeable on how intellectual property and patent law are applied to consumers.

President Biden’s judicial choices show a definite focus on diversity and inclusion. Judge Cunningham is among two other Biden judicial nominees who are black women. Judge Cunningham is an outstanding attorney and congratulations are definitely in order.

Here is a quote from Jane Bolin, the first African-American female judge in the United States:

“Those gains we have made were never graciously and generously granted. We have had to fight every inch of the way- in the face of sometimes insufferable humiliations.”
